Friedrichshafen

A City Powered by Water

Clean electricity for everybody: the local authority of Friedrichshafen satisfies its electricity requirements entirely through water power. And not only the local authority: almost all the inhabitants of this industrial city beside Lake Constance do the same. As early as the year 2000, the local energy company Technische Werke Friedrichshafen (TWF) determined to supply all local facilities and private households in Friedrichshafen exclusively with electricity generated by water power - without imposing an ecosurcharge.

Thus the city of Friedrichshafen and the TWF became early pioneers of climate-friendly electricity generation, and the first to offer 100% ecological electricity to both inhabitants and private customers. Over the past eight years, the town and its inhabitants have saved a total of around 400,000 tons of CO2 in this way.

The plan worked, making this a precedent for similar initiatives: other energy providers followed suit, as did other cities. Friedrichshafen and its
energy provider are pleased with this development, as it makes one thing evident: renewable energy is the energy of the future!
