Coaching Local Climate Protection
Within the scope of the “Coaching Kommunaler Klimaschutz” (Coaching municipal climate protection) project, particularly small and medium-sized municipalities are encouraged to get involved in structured climate protection activities by showcasing the experiences of advanced cities and municipalities.
The website offers tried-and-tested recommendations for action specifically for small and medium-sized municipalities, e.g. by means of the “(Durch)Starterpaket” (Starter package) that outlines worthwhile climate protection measures in eight fields of activity, which can be realised with little effort and yield results within a short period of time. The “Schnellkonzept Klimaschutz” (Fast-track climate protection concept) part module outlines how an inventory of climate protection activities within a municipality can be conducted, and how potential for further activities can be identified to systematically embed climate protection in municipal activities. The “Argumentationshilfe für kommunalen Klimaschutz” (Arguments for municipal climate protection) address typical objections to municipal climate protection and also offer ample background information.
In addition to the website, an individual consulting programme (coaching) by experienced municipal climate protection experts is being developed and implemented in five pilot municipalities. This should ultimately be made available to other interested municipalities.

KlimaScout
To prepare municipalities for adaptation to the consequences of climate change, Climate Alliance is to begin developing guidelines in the second half of 2011 in the form of a web-based guide for municipalities and an emergency support kit to deal with extreme occurrences. The aim of the guidelines is to help cities and municipalities in the development of an adaptation strategy and in the initiation and implementation of local adaptation activities. The information contained in the guidelines will be made available as a Wiki within an internet-based tool. The aim is for volunteer authors to develop the guidelines. Particularly specialists from the over 450 German Climate Alliance municipalities are invited to actively participate.
"Climate Protection in Municipalities" guidelines
Together with the German Institute for Urbanism (Difu) and Heidelberg Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (ifeu), Climate Alliance has developed the practical “Klimaschutz in Kommunen” (Climate protection in municipalities) guidelines, which should enable municipalities rapid entry into climate protection work and also create the conditions for continuation thereof.
These new guidelines are based on the 1997 guidelines that supported countless municipalities in the launch and implementation of local climate protection activities. The content and structure of the old guidelines has been revised completely, and the new guidelines made available in both print and digital (pdf) formats. The new guidelines also feature countless recent practical examples to copy or to encourage municipal climate protection activities.

Climate Toolbox
With its "Climate Toolbox" project the Climate Alliance provides local authorities in Germany with tools that they can use to initiate and realize campaigns on specific topics and aimed at specific target groups; the Toolbox also suggests way of involving the relevant population groups and players in local climate mitigation activities. The Toolbox provides appropriately tailored information and campaign plans, including text, printing and design templates that can be easily adapted by the local authority or used as they are. The suggestions can be selected, combined and used in ways that reflect the event taking place in the town or district.

LocalEnergy - Intelligent Energy Use in Cities and Municipalities
Intelligent energy use in cities and municipalities serves climate protection, spares the local household and prepares for the power supply in the future. In the project supported by the German Federal Environment Ministry and the German Federal Environment Agency the Climate Alliance has developed together with the environmental organisation Deutsche Umwelthilfe two offers for cities and municipalities. Above all for local energy experts and respectively environmental officers an internet-based data base with more than 400 concrete and exemplary measures and projects on the intelligent use of energy has been created. It should support the exchange between cities and municipalities by a new advisory service system. Thereby each advice was honoured with one point by the local authority that had realised a successful project, in order to increase the motivation for advices on the working level. Five regional workshops on the topics local energy standards, energetic refurbishment of buildings and energy optimised urban land use planning referred directly to local decision makers in politics and administrations.

Cool School – Energy for the Millennium Goals
In the framework of the project secondary school pupils were informed about the development policy aspects of energy by involving them directly through campaigns and initiatives. In addition to the knowledge transfer, direct implementation of the content is achieved through role plays and art initiatives. The students learn how they can help to protect the climate on local level and contribute to achieving a fairer, more sustainable future. We involve municipalities and students directly: during a preliminary consultation, we advise of the energy-saving potential in educational establishments, and encourage the introduction of financial incentive schemes. The global circumstances illustrate the background and the urgent need for immediate action.

fifty/fifty PLUS – Energy savings in Schools
The aim of the fifty/fifty PLUS project, which is sponsored by the German Federal Environmental Agency, is to extend and further develop the scheme for saving energy in schools and to secure its long-term future. Application of the model has frequently met with success and is linked to a system of financial incentives. fifty/fifty PLUS provides help to local authorities and schools throughout Germany with the aim of achieving broader participation. The PLUS consists of: "coaching" through the provision of detailed information, advice and training, the bundling and evaluation of available know-how, the development of a network of experts and users and the trialling of a "promoter" model. Since January 2006 the campaign website has been offering a wide range of materials, best practice examples, newsletters, information on events and a competition for both newcomers and the more advanced.
